Artist William Tolliver born 1951 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, second oldest of 14 children. Tolliver is a self taught artist dropped out of high at age 14. William learned to mix and blend colors by using a paint by numbers kit using this system he experimented with mixing colors and skin tones. William was a master at every medium, he handled figure studies, human-interest-situations, landscapes, portraits and semi-abstract all with equal perfection and all from a photographic memory. Tolliver never received any formal training. Tolliver's art has beeen termed Representational Abstract Expression he spent 38 of his 48 years perfecting his skills as an artist, he eduacated himself by studying the classics; Chagall, Monet, Vangogh and Picasso, his master of color, design and harmony is unmatched in the art world. Tolliver is ranked with critically acclaimed artists, Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence. Tolliver gained the reputation as one of America's most renown contempory artist. Tolliver received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions in the field of art, he has been featured in major art publications including the Art Gallery International and International Review of African American Art. His work is in the permanent collections of the Corcoran Museum, McKiissic Museum, New Orleans Museum and Hampton University. His paintings have been shown at the Smithsonian and U. S. Senate Building in Washinton D. C.
