Born 1969 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. John Holyfield was orphaned and reared by his grandmothers. Holyfield says his deep sense of spirituality comes from his grandmothers, Gracie Holyfield and Ruby Watson, the women who raised him from the age of three, after he was orphaned.
John's interest in art was evident early in his childhood and encouraged by his teachers, friends and family, John studied art through out school. John's art teacher Georgette Griffith, encouraged him to try new techniques and to study art history.
when John was a sophomore, Griffith entered one of his paintings in a state poster contest it won and went on to compete in the national competition in Baltimore.
After high school, John studied graphics design at Howard University and the University of Washington D. C. , John switched from graphic design to fine arts and print making.
John's style is influenced by Artists, Ernie Barnes, Norman Rockwell and Frederic Leighton.
Holyfield's artwork has a strong southern folksy feel and captures the essence of rural life, focusing on family themes, spirituality, culture and traditions. He draws from his childhood memories of his grandmothers stories and the baptist church when looking for inspiration for new works of art.
Holyfield's art has appeared television sitcoms, the " Steve Harvey Show " the " Jamie Foxx Show ", the " Wayans Brothers " and Good Times ".
